Setting the record Straight

One of the things that has bothered me since I started working at BumbleBar is that I keep hearing other companies claiming to be the first organic bar on the market.  Often, they even go so far as to say that they were organic “years before the competition”.

Time to set the record straight!!  Liz Ward started making certified ORGANIC, vegan, gluten free sesame snack bars in 1995 under the name Harmony Organics.  In 1997, they trademarked the BumbleBar brand.

So there you have it! Liz may be too modest to tell you about how much of a visionary she is but I’m not!   Liz Ward was the first to make a certified organic energy bar!

BumbleBar on the Food Network

This is a video from 2002.  Liz was very pregnant with Abby and a young Jed is featured.  Come check out Glenn’s bar rolling technique! BumbleBars are still made in 154 micro-batches that are rolled and cut by hand with those giant rolling pins!

I hope you enjoy watching this as much as I do!

The 35th running of Bloomsday

What a fun weekend!!!  This was my first opportunity to work the BumbleBar booth for the Bloomsday trade show.  It was incredible meeting our many loyal fans.  I had the best time surprising folks with t-shirts and Bumblebags.  One young lady was so excited she gave me a hug!  Now that’s BumbleLove!!

We gave out over 22,000 bite size samples.  It was so fun to hear people’s reactions.  Lots of “yum” and “wow” comments were made.  People who had tried our bars before were heard encouraging their friends and family to have a taste.  Children dragged their parents over to get a sample, old and young alike expressed joy and surprise upon tasting their first BumbleBar.

This was Liz and Glenn’s 7th Bloomsday trade show.  Repeatedly, I would hear folks expressing that the Bloomsday BumbleBar booth was an annual destination!  It amazed me how many faces Glenn and Liz recognized.  One woman came up with her adorable 6 month old baby boy in a front carrier.  Glenn had given her a bar last year when she was pregnant.  She plans to stop by again next year.

It was a joy to share with people what this company stands for.  Most were suprised to hear that BumbleBar was the first organic bar on the market back in 1995 and that the bars were still rolled by hand 154 bars at a time right here in the Spokane Valley.

My only regret from the show was that I was too busy chatting to remember to take pictures!!  If you were at the show or participated in the Bloomsday run this year I would

After the race

love to see your pics.  Come on over to our Facebook page and post your pictures and videos. Here are two of our young fans.

Does Natural=Healthy?

What does it mean when you buy products labeled “natural”?  Turns out, not much.  Putting the claim natural on your product is not regulated by the FDA or USDA. ”A natural nutrition bar and a certified organic nutrition bar may look nearly identical to a consumer, other than price, but a behind-the-scenes examination of how they were manufactured, focusing on the soy protein ingredients, reveals the importance of purchasing certified organic food.” says the report from Cornucopia institute.

What is it that makes the soy in one nutrition bar superior to another? In a video posted by The Cornucopia institute they talk about how whole soy beans are bathed in a neurotoxin called Hexane that is used to extract protein from the beans.  This was actually quite shocking for me to learn.  I have always mistakenly believed that foods with soy were a healthier choice for myself and my family.  When I learned about this practice I began talking to other mom’s about it.  99% of the people I have talked to were also operating under this false belief.

So what can you do to be sure the food you are eating and feeding your family is of the best quality possible.  Here is a list that The Cornucorpia institute came up with:

1. The use of Hexane and other synthetic solvents is prohibited in Organic food processing, but only when the food carries the “USDA Organic” seal.

Products that state they are “made with organic ingredients” only have to have 70% certified organic ingredients.  Companies are not prohibited from using hexane to process the remaining 30% of (non organic) ingredients.

2. Non-organic soy protein ingredients are almost universally processed with hexane.  Consumers wishing to avoid hexane extracted foods should avoid the following ingredients.

  • soy protein
  • soy protein isolate
  • soy protein concentrate
  • textured vegetable protein

I Don’t know about you, but when I’m looking for healthy food to feed myself and my family I picture scenes like this:

Soybean field and Summer storm clouds

NOT This:

Oil refinery. Hexane is a by-product of gasoline refining.

BumbleBar’s new look

Our new look!!

They are finally here! Our new bars are 1.4 ounces, as opposed to our previous 1.6 ounce bars.  The size change is minimal and we have passed on a small price reduction to our retailers.  Our goal is to keep the price of the bar under $2.00.

As you can see in the photos we have also reduced the amount of film we need to use to wrap the bars.  We have gone from a three ply wrapper to a two ply wrapper and reduced the amount of                                                                                                 waste material.  As always, we continue                                                                                            to buy all of our packaging in the USA                                                                                              unlike many of our competitors                                                                                                          who outsource to other countries.

Comparing the old bars to the new ones.

At BumbleBar we are always on the lookout for the latest in packaging to decrease our carbon footprint and keep our product fresh on the shelf.

I hope you all like the new look. The new wrappers are much easier to open. Now your kids will likely be able to tear them open on their own!!

Less wasted wrapper material

Don’t forget to watch for our new Suzi sized BumbleBar Jr.  They are wrapped in the easy to open, two-ply film as well!

Be Well!

Suzi Sized BumbleBar Jr.
